Heart Manual Facilitator Training

A two-day course covers facilitator training for both Post MI and Revascularisation Editions.

The Heart Manuals are not just books with accompanying audiotapes/CDs; they are evidence-based systems for delivering cardiac rehabilitation, and as such, training is compulsory in order to facilitate with patients.

The key to the effectiveness of the home-based self-management model of rehabilitation is facilitation of the process by trained health care professionals who work with patients and their carers during the six-week post-MI programme. Since 1992 more than 3,000 trainees have completed the Facilitator Training Course.

The two-day course is delivered jointly by a cardiac nurse and a clinical psychologist to groups of up to fourteen trainee facilitators. Courses are held in Edinburgh and by arrangement at venues across the UK.

The course has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of skills, knowledge and competence necessary to facilitate the Heart Manual. It also recognises the importance of work experience and the integrated nature of learning and work; therefore most of the activity where/when you use the Heart Manuals will be in your place of work.

A certificate of attendance is awarded for successful completion of the course. This constitutes a licence from NHS Lothian permitting the holder to practise as a Heart Manual Facilitator with patients who have been prescribed the Manual.

Existing Heart Manual Facilitators

Existing Heart Manual Facilitators can apply for information about cross over training which involves using a competency framework, new training folder and self-directed learning. This will enable them to facilitate either the Post MI or Revascularisation Manual with appropriate patients.

Since 2002, the Facilitator Training Course has included optional accreditation by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, for the award of 10 degree-level credits. Those who wish to qualify for the credits can opt to complete an assignment of a 2,000 word case study, following completion of the course, which is submitted for marking. If successful, the degree–level credits are awarded. It may be possible to transfer credit points to a current Degree. You should first check with your academic institution that they are prepared to accept the transfer.
