What is the Heart Manual - Post MI Edition

The Heart Manual – Post MI Edition is a rehabilitation programme designed for patients recovering from acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). Shown to be clinically effective in repeated studies, the Heart Manual is the UK‘s leading home-based cardiac rehabilitation programme, providing a standardised approach for more than 350 major NHS users across the UK, and contributing to the recovery of more than 16,000 heart attack patients every year. The Heart Manual is suitable as a stand-alone rehabilitation programme or can be integrated with existing hospital or primary care based programmes. A study in 2003 has highlighted the contribution of The Heart Manual to achieving targets set out in the NHS National Service Framework for Coronary Artery Disease1 (NSF) for cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention, subsequent studies have endorsed this. Use of the Manual is recommended not only in the NSF but also in the Scottish SIGN Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation2 , the Irish Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation Guidelines3 and NICE (2007)4.
