About The Heart Manual

Clinically effective home based Cardiac Rehabilitation after Heart Attack

The Heart Manual is the UK‘s leading home based rehabilitation programme for patients recovering from acute myocardial infarction (MI). The Manual, shown to be clinically effective in repeated studies 1, provides a standardised approach for more than 250 major NHS users across the UK, contributing to the recovery of more than 10,000 heart attack patients every year.

The Heart Manual is suitable as a stand-alone rehabilitation programme or can be integrated with existing hospital or primary care based programmes. The Heart Manual is part of the range of rehabilitation services offered by NHS Lothian – Primary and Community Division, Astley Ainslie Hospital, Grange Loan, Edinburgh EH9 2HL.

The Heart Manual, associated audiotapes, training materials, publicity materials and the contents of this website are the copyright of NHS Lothian – Primary and Community Division.

The Heart Manual – Revascularisation Edition

Built on the success of the original Manual, in 2002 the project team collaborated with the University of Birmingham in the development of a separate version of the Manual for use by revascularisation (coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and angioplasty patients (PTCA/PCI) which was evaluated in a four year study and results reported in 2005 2. In parallel with the University of Birmingham‘s evaluation a collaborative project with NHS colleagues in Dumfries and Galloway and West Lothian was carried out.

The Heart Manual, associated audiotapes/CDs, training materials, publicity materials and the contents of this website are the copyright of NHS Lothian.
