What is The Heart Manual – Revascularisation Edition
The Heart Manual Revascularisation Edition is a recently evaluated Manual for patients recovering from Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery (CABG) or Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA/PCI) has been developed.
The Heart Manual project collaborated with the University of Birmingham in the development of a separate version of the Manual for use by revascularisation (CABG and angioplasty) patients.
The new version has been evaluated in Birmingham (Jolly et al 2005) with major
NHS funding.
Results showed:
- Home-based (Heart Manual) and supervised hospital-based rehabilitation programmes equally improve outcomes at 6 months
- Secondary analysis: significant improvements for both programmes in smoking cessation.
The programme is delivered to patients by specially trained healthcare professionals, usually nurses, who complete the two day introduction to the Heart Manual.
