Heart Manual Health Care Support Workers
Training Course
12th February 2010
In the past, only registered nurses and other regulated clinicians trained as Heart Manual facilitators and were able to guide patients in the use of the Manual. In response to the various NHS modernisation strategies, including the expansion of the role of the Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) the Heart Manual Department has now developed a training programme to guide HCSWs in supporting the facilitation of the Heart Manual. The role of the HCSW is to familiarise the patient with the use of the Manual, under the supervision of a registered practitioner.
The role of the HCSW has been carefully delineated and a competency framework developed using the NHS Education for Scotland ‘Coronary Heart Disease Core Competencies for Healthcare Staff’. The pre-requisites are as follows:
- Observation of at least two Heart Manual consultations delivered by a Registered Heart Manual Facilitator prior to the training day
- Evidence of prior learning to at least NVQ/SVQ level 2 or local equivalent.
- The identification of a named local registered Heart Manual facilitator to support the development of clinical competency
The Heart Manual Support Worker training provides a comprehensive education package, providing the foundation for the development of an evidence-based learning approach.
